Gabriel of Georgia was a Georgian Orthodox monk and confessor, known for his profound faith, humility, and courageous witness to Christ during the Soviet persecution of the Church. He was born in 1929 as Goderdzi Urgebadze and received the monastic name Gabriel. He is especially remembered for publicly burning a large portrait of Stalin, for which he was persecuted and imprisoned. He lived an ascetic life, helping the poor and the sick, and many regarded him as a man endowed with the gifts of prophecy and healing. He reposed in 1995, and his holiness was soon recognized among the faithful. Today, he is one of the most venerated contemporary Georgian saints.
