SAINT PANTELEIMON OF MOUNT ATHOS

Saint Panteleimon, a great martyr, was born in Nicomedia and was a physician by profession. After his baptism and firm faith in Christ, he began healing people in the name of Christ whom other physicians could not cure. Before the evil Emperor Maximian, he boldly confessed Christ and healed a crippled man in front of the emperor. Panteleimon underwent severe tortures, but the Lord healed him each time. The executioner could not carry out the sentence until Saint Panteleimon finished his prayer. The Lord glorified him with many miracles, and the Church commemorates him at every blessing of water and oil. The most famous temple dedicated to Saint Panteleimon is the Russian church on Mount Athos.

A triptych is a work of art composed of three connected parts, most often painted or carved, which together form a single whole. In Christian art, especially in the Middle Ages, the triptych was used as an altarpiece or part of an iconostasis.

The central part is usually the largest and depicts the main scene—most often Jesus Christ, the Holy Theotokos (Mother of God), or saints of our Church.

The side panels are foldable and typically feature saints, angels, or the Lord and the Theotokos.

It is practical for transport, which made it popular in the Middle Ages among traveling believers and priests.
